隨處可見的筆記型電腦已像呼吸空氣般理所當然，有的款式甚至比智慧型手機還便宜。然而，不過短短1個世代前，要掀蓋才出現鍵盤和螢幕的設計不但顛覆傳統，而且所費不貲。
英國工程師艾倫比（John Ellenby）的GridSystems公司1982年發表「羅盤」（Compass）電腦，是全球首款可掀蓋電腦。他的兒子湯瑪斯（Thomas）向「美國有線電視財經新聞網」（CNNMoney）證實，艾倫比17日辭世，享壽75歲。
現在搬出啞鈴般般笨重的「羅盤」電腦，大概只會給人笑。它用1個可折疊支架支撐電腦背部並藉以避免機器過熱，螢幕則類似1張模糊郵票。儘管如此，「羅盤」當年售價8150美元，換算現今價值相當於2萬324美元。
不過也因太貴，一般人對它敬而遠之，只有像美國國家航空暨太空總署（NASA）那樣的政府機構趨之若鶩。
1980年代初期桌上型電腦才剛問世不久，艾倫比竟已對下世代電腦趨勢了然於胸，領先他的時代，率先推出掀蓋式的筆電。直到2005年筆電銷售才超越桌上型電腦。
艾倫比1990年代還共同創立研發擴增實境（AR）技術的GeoVector公司。今年夏天「精靈寶可夢GO」（Pokemon Go）行動遊戲發燒，再度證明艾倫比當年的遠見。（譯者：中央社何宏儒）1050830
