Mutombo來自非洲剛果民主共和國，1991年選秀首輪被丹佛金塊挑中，一入隊就成為防守中樞，在陣5年期間，場均12.9分、12.3籃板、3.8阻攻，是1994年金塊上演「老八傳奇」的要角。
這位英文口音極重的非洲大個兒，在效力過的球隊心中的地位也很重要，去年亞特蘭大老鷹也在開幕戰退休他的球衣，背號一樣是55號，而他也在同年入選名人堂。
